Justice Served: Notorious Serial Offender Fatally Shot in Dramatic Police Confrontation near Garbhanga Hills
In Guwahati, a police encounter on Monday led to the shooting of a notorious serial offender, Jaideep Mazumdar, in the leg by security forces near Garbhanga Hills. Mazumdar, a Birubari resident, has a criminal record with over 60 cases, including chain snatching and loot, across various police stations in Guwahati. The incident unfolded during an operation intended for the recovery of stolen goods. While in Garbhanga Hills, Mazumdar complained of nausea, asking to relieve himself. Allegedly, he took advantage of the situation, grabbing a sub-inspector’s pistol and attempting to fire at the officers. Acting in self-defense, police shot Mazumdar, injuring his leg, and immediately transported him to a nearby hospital for medical care.
This encounter is the third of its kind in Assam within the year’s first 21 days. Earlier, Guwahati and Sribhumi witnessed two similar incidents where suspects were shot in the leg while trying to escape. The frequent police encounters have sparked concern and garnered attention, particularly from the Supreme Court. In October 2024, the court described the rising number of encounters in Assam as a “very serious” matter, suggesting the creation of a commission for further investigation.
Since May 2021, Assam police have been closely scrutinized due to a surge in encounter incidents, resulting in over 51 deaths and 139 injuries between May 2021 and June 2022. The police consistently assert that these shootings occur when suspects attempt to flee or pose a threat to officers during custody. As public and legal scrutiny intensifies, the Assam police’s actions continue to be a focal point of debate and concern.
