Heartfelt Greetings from Assam CM on the Momentous 54th Foundation Day of Tripura, Meghalaya, and Manipur
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma extended heartfelt greetings to the people of Tripura, Meghalaya, and Manipur on their 54th Foundation Day. Celebrating this pivotal anniversary, CM Sarma conveyed his wishes via the social media platform X, acknowledging the states’ natural beauty and warm-hearted populace. He praised these northeastern sisters for embodying the best of Ashtalakshmi and hoped for their continued growth and prosperity.
Tripura, Meghalaya, and Manipur, three uniquely diverse northeastern states, commemorate their full statehood status achieved on January 21, 1972, following the enactment of the North Eastern Region (Reorganisation) Act, 1971. This landmark legislation redefined the political landscape of India’s Northeast, offering greater autonomy and recognition to these regions.
Manipur’s journey toward statehood began before India’s independence in 1947, when Maharaja Bodhachandra Singh signed the Instrument of Accession. After the state’s first elections in 1948, Manipur was pressured to merge with India in 1949 despite local opposition, marking a significant shift in its governance.
Tripura similarly transitioned from a princely state to joining the Indian Union on November 15, 1949. Queen Kanchan Prabha was instrumental in this integration, steering the process after the death of King Bir Bikram and during her son’s minority.
Meghalaya’s path to statehood was marked by the accession of the Garo and Khasi regions to India in 1947. Achieving autonomous status within Assam on April 2, 1970, Meghalaya reached full statehood in 1972 alongside its northeastern counterparts.
Foundation Day celebrates these states’ remarkable journey toward autonomy, highlighting their cultural heritage and significant contributions to India’s unity and diversity. As they continue to develop, the people of Tripura, Meghalaya, and Manipur remain essential to the rich tapestry of the nation.
