Assam’s Reassuring Stand: Minister Confirms No Hike in Power Tariffs
Guwahati: Assam’s Power Minister, Prasanta Phukan, has assured residents that there will be no increase in electricity tariffs in the state. Addressing media concerns on Monday, Phukan confirmed that no proposals to hike power tariffs have been received, and there are no current plans to impose additional financial burdens on consumers.
Phukan also addressed concerns about the new smart power meters, affirming their efficiency and clarifying that they are not producing inflated electricity bills.
In a push towards renewable energy, Assam is currently generating 1.8 megawatts of electricity from rooftop solar panels under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, with installations spread across various households. The state government aims to significantly boost solar energy production by 2030, incorporating policy changes to support this goal.
Streamlining efforts further, a senior government official disclosed that the requirement for technical feasibility approvals for installing 10-kilowatt rooftop solar panels has been removed. Moreover, solar panel installations are now promised to be completed within three days of application, with smart electric meters provided at no extra cost.
The official highlighted the potential for solar power generation from unused rooftops and adjacent wastelands, with surplus energy being fed back into the grid. Amid rising electricity costs from fossil fuels, solar energy is proving to be a cost-effective alternative, with production costs now comparable to, or cheaper than, commercial electricity tariffs for consumers.
