Revolutionary Umiam-Shillong Four-Lane Extension: Experience Smooth and Stress-Free Travel

SHILLONG, Jan 19: The long-awaited expansion of the road from Umiam to Shillong into a four-lane highway is anticipated to alleviate the ongoing traffic congestion in the region significantly. The Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Public Works Department (Roads), Prestone Tynsong, has announced that a meeting will soon take place to finalize the alignment of this vital project, which is aimed at enhancing the commuting experience for Shillong residents and daily travelers.

Currently in its preliminary stages, the project is considering various alignment options, with final decisions pending detailed stakeholder consultations. Though the precise terminus of the road in Shillong is yet to be determined, extending it to Rilbong is one of the possibilities under review. Another proposal on the table involves splitting the route to ease traffic flow between Shillong and the New Shillong Township.

A team of consultants and PWD officials is expected to convene soon to settle on the alignment, ensuring that the project progresses smoothly. The central government has offered its backing for this extension, emphasizing the project’s importance in tackling the growing traffic issues in Shillong.

Present travel times between Umiam and Jorabat range from one to one and a half hours under normal circumstances. However, significant bottlenecks are often reported from Mawlai to Shillong and at Khanapara in Guwahati, where daily traffic jams are a persistent problem. The proposed four-lane expansion is set to address these issues by improving connectivity and reducing travel durations significantly.

As discussions on the alignment near their conclusion, the project promises to be a remarkable stride toward not only easing Shillong’s traffic challenges but also advancing the infrastructural development of Meghalaya, highlighting its potential to transform daily commutes and enrich the overall quality of life in the area.
