Nagaland CM Defeats Health Rumours: Urges United Opposition to PAP Reimposition
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio addressed the conclusion of the Angami Baptist Church Council (ABCC) Quinquennial Conference in Kohima, dismissing concerns about his health and assuring the attendees of his well-being, attributed to divine grace and public prayers. Held under the theme “Arise, Shine,” the conference saw Rio acknowledge the unifying power of Christian faith among Nagas amidst ongoing unresolved issues and hardships. He emphasized the role of spirituality in safeguarding the community.
Politically, Rio highlighted the persistent challenges facing the Naga people, urging leaders to adopt foresight and unity to amplify their voices in higher political arenas, including Parliament. He called on tribal organizations and the public to collectively oppose the re-imposition of the Protected Area Regime (PAP), noting the state cabinet’s decision to seek a review of this policy. Rio cautioned that the PAP could undermine Nagaland’s reputation as the safest state for women and a sought-after tourist destination.
Rev Dr Zelhou Keyho, NBCC General Secretary, urged the church to expand its impact beyond traditional confines, emphasizing the importance of addressing local communities and looking forward rather than dwelling on past achievements. He highlighted the biblical principle of maintaining proportion between the collective body and Christ as the head.
Speakers included Rev Dr Rachülie Vihienuo, discussing “The Church of Christ: Renewed to Impact,” and Rev Dr Ashok Andrews, who reiterated the conference’s theme “The Church of Christ: Arise, Shine” during the sessions. The event opened with a welcome address by Rev Dr Kevichalie Metha, setting a thoughtful tone for the congregation. Throughout the conference, the focus remained on spiritual rejuvenation and proactive leadership to address both religious and socio-political challenges faced by the Naga community.
