Urgent Showdown: Meghalaya’s HITO Challenges Controversial Poultry-Piggery MoU with Karnataka!
The Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) of Meghalaya has voiced strong objections to a forthcoming Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Karnataka concerning poultry and piggery sectors. Set to be signed on January 23, the proposal involves the Meghalaya government and the Karnataka Cooperative Society. In a letter to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma dated January 19, HITO highlighted several issues that have prompted their opposition.
HITO’s primary concerns revolve around the lack of transparency and the exclusion of public and legislative consultations. They argue that the agreement, crafted without the public’s input, undermines democratic principles and the citizens’ right to participate in decisions impacting their communities. Additionally, the organization flagged the absence of a legislative debate on the MoU’s terms, stressing the need for scrutiny and discussion in the Legislative Assembly to ensure governance accountability.
