Urgent Appeal: CM Manik Saha Raises Alarming Concerns Over Bangladesh’s Unauthorized Dam Construction to Amit Shah

Agartala, January 18, 2025: Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha has urgently called on Union Home Minister Amit Shah to address concerns regarding an illegal dam being constructed by Bangladesh at the India-Bangladesh border near Kailashahar in Tripura. Dr. Saha submitted a comprehensive report detailing the hazards posed by this development and emphasized the need for prompt intervention.
The dam, located in Devipur, Sylhet Division, is alleged to violate international regulations due to its proximity to the zero point of the border. This new structure is larger and higher than an existing Indian dam built 40 years ago along the Manu River, which raises serious concerns about potential flooding in Kailashahar, especially with the monsoon approaching.
A team, including Unakoti District Magistrate Dilip Kumar Chakma and Additional District Magistrate Argha Saha, conducted an inspection of the site on January 17. Following the assessment, Chakma confirmed, “The construction is entirely illegal and dangerously close to the zero point. Such activity cannot proceed without adhering to guidelines.”
Echoing these concerns, Dr. Saha stated, “This illegal construction endangers Kailashahar. I have apprised the Home Minister of the situation, and we expect swift action to safeguard our people.”
The state government is on high alert, emphasizing vigilance and preparedness to mitigate potential risks stemming from the construction. The call for rapid response underscores the urgency of cross-border cooperation to prevent environmental and human hazards at the border.
