Shocking Harassment: Police Targeting Former NLCT Members Sparks Outrage, Claims Doke
In Itanagar on January 16th, Anthony Doke, the self-proclaimed leader of the United Tani Army (UTA), claimed that the state police are wrongfully targeting former members of the National Liberation Council of Taniland (NLCT) by linking them to the UTA. In an interview, Doke argued that the police are mistaken in their approach and urged them to cease harassing these individuals. He emphasized that the ex-NLCT operatives are no longer affiliated with the UTA, having moved on to start new lives, with many establishing families. Doke insisted that all current UTA operatives are new recruits.
Itanagar Superintendent of Police Rohit Rajbir Singh confirmed that the former NLCT operatives were brought in for interrogation to verify certain information. This development comes after the UTA released press statements and videos last month showcasing purported training camps.
Doke himself has a history with the NLCT, which was active between 2005 and 2010. During that time, the Arunachal Pradesh police successfully neutralized the group, arresting its members, including Doke, while many others surrendered. At its height, the NLCT comprised about 15 members and faced numerous extortion charges across the state.
The UTA’s recent activities, including their media releases, suggest they are seeking a new footing, but Doke wants to ensure that past NLCT members are left out of current police investigations. Authorities remain vigilant as they sift through intelligence to ensure public safety while navigating the complexities of former and current insurgent affiliations.
