Devajit Saikia’s Inspiring Journey: From Giving Up Cricket to Thriving as BCCI Secretary
Devajit Saikia’s unexpected rise to the position of Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) highlights his intriguing journey in sports administration. Previously uninterested in administrative roles, Saikia stepped into the position on January 12, after serving as the interim secretary since Jay Shah’s appointment as ICC chairman on December 1.
In a candid interview with Guwahati Connection, a YouTube-exclusive series by GPlus in 2024, Saikia revealed his initial passion was playing cricket, rather than managing it. Despite an active cricket career that saw him compete at high levels until the age of 21, personal reasons led him to retire early from playing, diverting his attention away from administration.
Saikia confessed that the allure of administrative duties never matched his love for the sport itself, emphasizing, “A player is always better than the umpire, just like a lawyer is better than a judge.” His heartfelt statement underscores his preference for being directly involved with the game over administrative responsibilities.
In addition to his cricketing roles, Saikia serves as the Advocate General of Assam. From 2019 to 2022, he was the Secretary of the Assam Cricket Association before moving to the BCCI as joint secretary. Despite his administrative roles, Saikia remains candid about his greater joy in being a participant in the sport he loves.
