Urgent Action: Biren Demands Scrutiny Over Skyrocketing Airfare Crisis in Manipur
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has urged Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu to dispatch a team to investigate the steep rise in airfares from Manipur to various destinations. During a video conference at the launch of three new Alliance Air flights funded by the state’s Viability Gap Funding scheme, Singh expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Kinjarapu for supporting the airline’s entry into the region. Alliance Air will now connect Imphal with Kolkata, Guwahati, and Dimapur.
Singh highlighted that the airfare from Delhi to Imphal has surged to nearly Rs 20,000, while prices for travel from Imphal to Guwahati fluctuate between Rs 5,000 and 10,000, making it difficult for ordinary citizens to afford such expenses. He noted that Manipur is experiencing a challenging period, with people avoiding highways due to ongoing crises. Consequently, the 18 lakh residents of Imphal Valley frequently rely on air travel to exit the state.
Singh appealed to the civil aviation minister to reduce the cost of flight tickets and increase the number of direct flights to major cities like Delhi and Kolkata. In a subsequent post on social media platform ‘X’, Singh announced the commencement of new flight services on the Imphal-Guwahati, Imphal-Kolkata, and Imphal-Dimapur routes, with fares capped at Rs 5,000. These services are supported by the state government to make air travel more affordable and accessible for the local population.
