Shock and Resilience: Olympic Spirit Endures as Athletes’ Train Journey Halted by France Rail Sabotage
Arson Attacks Disrupt French High-Speed Rail Network Before Paris Olympics
Arson attacks on Friday severely disrupted France’s high-speed rail network, causing widespread delays just hours before the Paris Olympics opening ceremony. Officials labeled the attacks as premeditated sabotage, coinciding with heightened security in the capital as it prepared to host 300,000 spectators and numerous VIPs.
Although the weekend is expected to show improvement in rail traffic, the national operator SNCF warned that cancellations and delays would persist. They assured, however, that all accredited participants of the Games would reach their destinations. Specifically, two-thirds of high-speed trains to Western and Southwestern France, and 80% in Northern France, would operate as scheduled.
The disruptions compelled UK Prime Minister and other dignitaries to alter their travel plans. Notably, two out of four trains carrying athletes on the western Atlantique line were stopped, affecting German showjumping athletes Philipp Weishaupt and Christian Kukuk.
The attacks reportedly strived to block key routes to Paris, an assertion supported by outgoing Prime Minister Gabriel Attal. The sabotage appeared targeted to disrupt travel for Olympics visitors and holiday-goers.
The Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo declared the opening ceremony would proceed unaffected. However, the Eurostar service between Paris and London saw 25% of its trains cancelled on Friday, with disruptions expected to extend through the weekend. Additionally, Basel-Mulhouse airport underwent a brief evacuation due to a bomb threat, later reopening with resumed flight operations.
Investigations have been launched into the sabotage, hinting at possible extreme-left group involvement, a method consistent with recent attacks in Germany. A probe by Paris prosecutors will scrutinize potential damage to national interests, carrying severe penalties upon conviction.
Pope Francis, via social media, emphasized the Olympic spirit as a counter to violence, advocating for peace and unity during the Games.
