Unwavering Triumph: Yunus Defies All Odds in Inspiring Echo Across Shillong
Bangladesh is facing mounting challenges under its new, interim government led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus, following the ousting and escape of longtime Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to India. Since her departure in August, the nation’s situation has progressively worsened, with the interim administration struggling to restore stability. Hasina’s followers, particularly her Awami League supporters, are simply waiting for the right moment to act.
The army is reportedly on the brink of revolt, as various power centers compete for control, each under its own general. This turmoil was inevitable, given Hasina’s substantial military backing. Yunus, who sought American support, finds his expectations unmet, reflecting U.S. reluctance to endorse an illegitimate regime despite its interests in the region.
The interim government has failed to initiate elections or outline a path to legitimate governance, impairing its ability to gain international cooperation. Yunus’s leadership has come into question, as his indecision across various issues underscores a lack of political acumen and resolve, leading to increasing disobedience within the administration, including the military ranks.
Unlike Pakistan, Bangladesh lacks significant military strength and cannot rely on India for protection as it once did during its formation in the 1970s. The possibility of Chinese military involvement is unlikely, as it might provoke direct confrontation from the West, especially the U.S. Pakistan, too, is limited in its capacity to offer meaningful military aid to Bangladesh.
India remains cautious, wary of its regional interests and the potential repercussions of an alliance between China, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Despite calls for Sheikh Hasina’s extradition from India, the Yunus regime’s demands are likely to be ignored due to its lack of legitimate authority. Bangladesh’s future hangs in the balance as it grapples with internal and external pressures, underscoring the urgent need for a return to legitimate governance.
