Revolutionary ‘Sarathi Samaj’ Debuts in Sikkim’s Soreng: A Hopeful Crusade Against Addiction and Mental Health Struggles
On January 14, the inaugural ‘Sarathi Samaj’ was established in Lungchok village, Sombaria, Sikkim, as part of the Sarathi 1.0 initiative, aiming for an addiction-free and mentally healthy society. This effort aligns with the vision of Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang to enhance mental wellness and eliminate substance abuse across the state.
The Sarathi 1.0 initiative, launched on December 24, 2024, in Soreng District, focuses on training Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) from Soreng CHC and Sombaria PHC. These ASHAs are leading the creation of Sarathi Samajs in their villages, with Asha worker Goma Sharma spearheading the first in Lungchok.
To mark the establishment of the first Sarathi Samaj, a public awareness meeting took place at Lungrok Salangdang, Gram Prashasan Kendra. The event was attended by key stakeholders including the Gram Prashasan Kendra chairperson, Block Development Councillor, Integrated Child Development Services workers, and local residents.
During the gathering, Goma Sharma emphasized the mission of the Sarathi Samaj, which is to foster an addiction-free, mentally healthy village through targeted interventions and community support. She encouraged residents to actively engage with the society’s initiatives. The Block Councillor echoed this sentiment by describing Sarathi Society as a movement dedicated to aiding those faced with substance abuse and mental health challenges.
The Gram Prashasan Kendra chairperson pledged full support to Sarathi Samaj, highlighting plans to connect individuals in need with rehabilitation centers and necessary resources for recovery.
An operating committee, comprising local leaders and representatives from various sectors, has been formed to oversee Sarathi Samaj’s activities. The committee will officially begin its operations in February 2025, with detailed plans to be presented at the upcoming Gram Sabha meeting.
