Historic Shift: Former Assam Cricketer Devajit Saikia Triumphantly Replaces Jay Shah as BCCI Secretary!
Devajit Saikia, a former Assam cricketer, has stepped into the role of secretary of the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI), succeeding Jay Shah. The position had been unoccupied for over a month following Shah’s transition to chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Saikia’s appointment was followed by his participation in a critical meeting with BCCI President Roger Binny to assess India’s performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.
Prominent figures like captain Rohit Sharma and coach Gautam Gambhir were present at the meeting. According to India Today, an insider revealed that the discussions were comprehensive, focusing on India’s challenges in Test cricket. The assembly concluded with a commitment to strategize improvements after the Champions Trophy.
Devajit Saikia’s diverse background amplifies his capability in this new role. An alumnus of Assam’s cricket scene, he played as a wicketkeeper in the early 1990s, amassing 53 runs and nine dismissals in four first-class matches. Transitioning from sports, Saikia embraced a legal career at 28, practicing at the Gauhati High Court. His career also includes sports quota positions with the Northern Frontier Railways and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
Saikia ventured into cricket administration in 2016, becoming one of the six vice presidents of the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) under the leadership of Hemanta Biswa Sarma, now Assam’s Chief Minister. By 2019, he advanced to ACA secretary, solidifying his administrative acumen.
In his new capacity, Saikia is poised to leverage his multifaceted experience to navigate the BCCI through current challenges and foster future successes in Indian cricket.
