Urgent Alert: HMPV Cases Surge in Gujarat with Two New Reports
In Gujarat, two new cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) were reported, involving a nine-month-old child and a 59-year-old man, bringing the total number of cases to five in less than a week. Both patients were admitted to private hospitals in Ahmedabad, with no history of travel, according to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). The nine-month-old boy was admitted on January 6 with cold-like symptoms, and the man from Kutch district was diagnosed similarly.
Earlier, an eight-year-old boy in the Sabarkantha district was confirmed to have HMPV, marking the third case. Prior to that, an 80-year-old man in Ahmedabad, who suffers from asthma, tested positive. The first case was recorded on January 6, involving a two-month-old boy from Rajasthan. After receiving treatment, the infant was discharged from the hospital.
HMPV, linked to the Paramyxoviridae family, was discovered in 2001 and shares similarities with the Respiratory Syncytial Virus. It spreads through respiratory droplets and contact with contaminated surfaces or infected individuals.
The rising cases highlight the necessity for public awareness about HMPV’s symptoms, such as fever, nasal congestion, runny nose, and cough, to prevent further transmission.
