Stay Reassured: Health Dept’s Vital Update on HMPV Offers Peace of Mind
GANGTOK: In a recent meeting led by Chief Secretary R. Telang, Sikkim’s health officials assessed the region’s preparedness regarding the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) amidst reports of increased cases of severe acute respiratory illness in China linked to the virus. An official communication emphasized that HMPV predominantly causes mild respiratory conditions, though it can pose severe risks to immunocompromised individuals. First identified in the Netherlands in 2001, HMPV has since been recognized worldwide.
The Health and Family Welfare Department assured the public that, despite global reports, the virus is not resulting in any unusual patterns or severe outbreaks in India, and there is no immediate cause for alarm. Current surveillance systems are capable and actively monitoring the situation.
As a precautionary measure, the department urges the public to follow preventive guidelines and seek medical advice if symptoms arise. HMPV spreads primarily through close contact with infected individuals, such as through coughing, sneezing, or contaminated surfaces. Common symptoms include a cough, runny nose, fever, sore throat, and difficulty breathing.
Preventive advice includes frequent hand washing, regular cleaning of surfaces, and avoiding close contact with anyone exhibiting respiratory symptoms. By adhering to these measures, individuals can protect themselves and their communities from potential infection.
The advisory serves as a reminder of the importance of public health vigilance and community cooperation in preventing the spread of infectious diseases.
