Beloved Actor Gyanada Kakati Passes Away at 93: A Heartfelt Farewell in Shillong
Pioneering radio announcer and renowned actress Gyanada Kakati passed away at age 93 on Wednesday, marking the end of an era for Assamese cinema and broadcasting. After a prolonged illness, she took her last breath at Bethany Hospital in Shillong. Born in Shillong in 1932, Kakati broke new ground as the first female announcer for Akashvani Guwahati. Her acting career began with the 1949 film “Parghat,” and she went on to star in several Bengali films. Her significant role in the 1959 Assamese film “Puberun,” the first from Assam to be featured at the Berlin International Film Festival, highlighted her illustrious career.
Kakati’s contributions to Assamese arts earned her numerous accolades, including the Bishnu Rabha Award from the Assam government in 2002. Her passing has deeply saddened the Assamese film and radio communities, who remember her as a trailblazer whose influence extended to future generations. Political leaders also expressed their condolences. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma noted her passing leaves a significant void in Assam’s cultural landscape. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal remarked, “A bright star of Assamese cinema has fallen.”
In addition to her film achievements, Kakati was a regular vocalist at Akashvani centers in Shillong and Guwahati, captivating audiences with her performances. Her lasting legacy in Assamese cinema and broadcasting remains impactful, celebrating a life dedicated to enriching the arts and culture of the region.
