Desperate Struggle: Silpukhuri Residents Demand Urgent Relief from Guwahati’s Failing Water Supply System as GMC Points to ‘Ancient, Leaking’ Pipelines
Residents of Silpukhuri, Guwahati, have been grappling with severe water shortages since November, as the last delivery from the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) was reported on December 30, 2024. Due to the erratic supply, locals have become increasingly reliant on private suppliers, resulting in soaring prices and long waiting lines for water.
The water crisis is attributed to aged and leaky pipelines, according to GMC officials. Speaking to GPlus, a representative highlighted the extensive leakage problem, especially in the main pipeline that serves over 100 connections. Efforts to repair these issues are further complicated by ongoing construction work by the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Guwahati Jal Board (GJB), which poses a risk to infrastructure projects.
GMC is currently transitioning its water supply duties to GJB, with approximately ₹6 crore allocated for replacing existing connections. However, an immediate solution remains elusive. Although GJB is prioritizing Silpukhuri, setbacks have hindered progress, frustrating residents who lack a clear timeline for when regular water supply will resume.
The GJB’s new pipeline network is reportedly ready, but residents must complete online registration and pay a nominal fee to gain access when the service begins. Despite this preparation, the absence of a specific timeline has left many inhabitants disillusioned.
“The authorities have utterly failed us. Water is essential, yet we endure this ordeal with no immediate resolution,” lamented a local resident.
The ongoing water crisis in Silpukhuri emphasizes weaknesses in planning and coordination among city departments, leaving residents in uncertainty about when relief might arrive. The situation underscores the urgent need for improved collaboration and effective solutions to address basic necessities for the community.
