US Congressman Blasts Biden Administration in Fiery Letter Over Gautam Adani Bribery Scandal: What if India Refuses?
In a letter to U.S. Attorney General Merrick B. Garland, Republican Congressman Lance Gooden criticized the Biden administration’s decision to pursue an investigation into Indian billionaire Gautam Adani, expressing concerns over the potential for diplomatic friction with key ally India. As a member of the House Judiciary Committee, Gooden questioned the Justice Department’s choice to focus on foreign entities, warning that such actions might strain crucial alliances and impact U.S. economic growth and international relations.
Gooden’s letter, dated January 7, raises alarm about the perceived “selective actions” of the Department of Justice (DOJ) and their potential repercussions on U.S.-India relations, an essential partnership in the Asia-Pacific region. He urged the DOJ to prioritize domestic issues over international cases with dubious jurisdiction, such as the allegations against Adani. Gooden also inquired whether external figures like billionaire George Soros influenced these investigations and what the U.S. would do if India refused an extradition request, highlighting possible diplomatic challenges.
The controversy stems from U.S. prosecutors charging Adani with allegedly orchestrating a $265 million bribery scheme to secure favorable terms for solar power contracts in India. The Adani Group, however, dismissed the allegations as “baseless” and asserted its compliance with all laws. Additionally, Gooden questioned the DOJ’s approach, noting their lack of indictments against Americans despite alleged domestic involvement.
The letter reflects broader concerns among lawmakers that targeting high-profile foreign entities could jeopardize strategic alliances and economic cooperation with pivotal global partners, echoing doubts about the DOJ’s priorities and strategies in handling international criminal cases.
