Breaking News: Landmark Report Compilation by Reservation Committee Sparks Hope and Anticipation
SHILLONG, Jan 7: The Expert Committee on State Reservation Policy is actively working on compiling its report, Chief Secretary Donald P Wahlang stated on Tuesday. While he expressed uncertainty about the completion timeline, he noted that the committee recently convened in Delhi to discuss findings from their investigative tour across Meghalaya. All committee members participated in this crucial meeting.
The committee, tasked with reviewing the state reservation policy, has already conducted meetings in Shillong, Jowai, and Garo Hills to gather insights from various stakeholders. It is led by Justice (retired) Mool Chand Garg, with notable members including Justice (retired) Dr Satish Chandra, Prof DV Kumar, Prof Chander Shekhar, and Prof Subhadip Mukherjee. Established in 1972, the state’s reservation policy allots 40% of jobs to Garos, 40% to Khasi-Jaintia tribes, 5% to other tribes, and 15% to general category candidates. According to 2011 census data, Meghalaya is home to over 14.1 lakh Khasis and more than 8.21 lakh Garos.
In related developments, a separate committee addressing reforms within the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) is expected to submit its recommendations by the end of January. Chief Secretary Wahlang mentioned that this panel, formed to address longstanding controversies within the MPSC, has engaged external experts to enhance its proposals. The committee, led by Principal Secretary in-charge of Arts and Culture FR Kharkongor, includes Tourism Director Cyril Diengdoh and Ambrose Ch Marak, Secretary to the Education Department, as members. Wahlang expressed confidence in the committee’s ability to meet its deadline.
Both initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to ensuring equitable representation in public employment and tackling inefficiencies within its administrative bodies. These efforts are crucial steps toward fostering inclusivity and transparency in Meghalaya’s socio-political landscape.
