Unbreakable Bonds: PM Modi’s Passionate Drive to Elevate India-EU Strategic Partnership
New Delhi, Jan 7: Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the significant advancements in the India-EU Strategic Partnership over the past decade during a phone conversation with Antonio Costa, the newly appointed President of the European Council. Having previously served as Portugal’s Prime Minister, Costa contacted Modi upon assuming his new role, succeeding Charles Michel following the EU Parliament elections in June 2024.
The phone discussion underscored the shared commitment to enhancing the India-EU Strategic Partnership, particularly in technology, green energy, digital space, trade, and investments. Modi took to X to express his satisfaction with the conversation, noting the natural alignment between India and the EU.
Both leaders emphasized the importance of swiftly concluding a mutually beneficial India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and expressed anticipation for the upcoming India-EU Summit to be held at a mutually convenient time. They also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest and agreed to maintain open communication, as per the Prime Minister’s Office statement.
Amidst congratulating Costa on his election via a post on X last June, Modi expressed eagerness to advance the India-EU Strategic Partnership further. Costa, who also served as the Mayor of Lisbon in 2007, 2009, and 2013, expressed a shared vision for reinforcing unity among member states during a speech at the inauguration of the Polish presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Costa praised Poland as a highlight of EU enlargement and a strategic investment in ensuring freedom and democracy. He expressed confidence in Poland’s presidency demonstrating the interconnectedness of patriotism and European integration, while reinforcing the role of rotating presidencies in driving the EU’s strategic agenda. Under the motto ‘Security, Europe!’ Costa emphasized the need to bolster security for sustaining peace in Europe.
