Outrage as Meghalaya Police Detain Activists Stopping Assam Vehicles at Umtyngar
The Meghalaya police detained members of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Federation (HNYF) on July 26 after they obstructed Assam-registered vehicles from traveling to Sohra and Dawki. The incident occurred at the Umtyngar junction, approximately 20 kilometers from Shillong, where the HNYF demanded these vehicles turn back.
Most of the vehicles halted by the pressure group were en route to popular tourist destinations like Sohra and Dawki. In response to the disruption, police personnel from Sohra Sub Division and the Special Operations Team promptly arrived at the scene to assess and manage the situation, ensuring peace and order.
The HNYF’s actions followed allegations that local vehicles were being denied the opportunity to transport passengers to these destinations. The organization subsequently announced its intention to bar Assam-registered vehicles (bearing AS plates) from carrying tourists.
Despite intervention by authorities, the HNYF remains resolute in its stance against allowing Assam-registered vehicles in tourist areas. The group has formally demanded a policy to exclude vehicles registered outside Meghalaya from transporting tourists, a move aimed at prioritizing local transport services.
This confrontation underscores ongoing tensions between local organizations and inter-state travel, particularly in regions with significant tourist activity. The situation highlights the challenges faced by authorities in balancing regional autonomy with the need for maintaining peace and accessible travel routes for tourists.
As the authorities work to mitigate the impact of these disruptions, the broader implications for tourism and regional relations between Meghalaya and Assam remain in focus. The actions and demands of the HNYF continue to draw attention to local sentiments and the complexities of inter-state cooperation in India’s Northeastern states.
