Breaking Relief: SC Grants Emotional Reprieve with Medical Bail to Asaram Bapu Until March 31
New Delhi, Jan 7: The Supreme Court has granted self-styled godman Asaram Bapu medical bail until March 31, allowing him to seek medical treatment on humanitarian grounds. The decision, made by a bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and Rajesh Bindal, came despite Gujarat’s Solicitor General Tushar Mehta arguing that adequate medical facilities were available to Asaram in custody.
Asaram’s defense highlighted inconsistencies in the testimony of the prosecutrix during the hearing. However, the bench refrained from addressing these merits and emphasized conditions for Asaram’s release, notably forbidding contact with his followers. The court indicated that Asaram’s health might be reassessed before the bail period ends.
In January 2023, Asaram was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Gujarat court for a 2013 sexual assault case involving a female disciple at his ashram. This conviction follows his earlier life sentence in 2018 by a special POCSO court in Jodhpur for raping a minor girl in 2013. Asaram has been imprisoned since September 2013.
The controversial figure was previously granted parole for 30 days for treatment at a private Ayurvedic hospital in Jodhpur on November 7, 2024, marking his second parole in 11 years, following a seven-day release in August for medical reasons.
