The 4th Meghalaya State League 2024 is set to resume with high stakes as defending champions Rangdajied United and 2019 winners Shillong Lajong clash in the quarterfinals on January 9 at the Wahiajer Sports Complex. The highly anticipated kick-off is scheduled for 1 pm, and this match marks the league’s comeback after a hiatus since November, which allowed the state men’s team to focus on the National Football Championship for the Santosh Trophy.
The Meghalaya Football Association, with support from the state government, orchestrates this marquee event. Tournament Director Dr. LL Mawsor has communicated the quarterfinal schedule to the participating eight clubs.
Following the Rangdajied and Lajong face-off, a thrilling double-header awaits on January 11. Sutnga and Ladthadlaboh, rivals from the Jaintia Hills, will compete in Diengshynrum, Khliehriat. Concurrently, at the SSA Stadium in Shillong, Mawlai seeks redemption in a semifinal rematch against Khliehmawlieh, who had edged them out in the MSL 2023 only to lose to Rangdajied in the final.
The quarterfinal stage concludes on January 14, with Chipakkore facing Rymbai Shkenshynriah at the PA Sangma Stadium in Tura.
Reaching the quarterfinals as group leaders were Chipakkore (Group A), Sutnga (Group B), Ladthadlaboh (Group C), Rangdajied (Group D), Lajong (Group E), and Mawlai (Group F). R. Shkenshynriah and Khliehmawlieh advanced as the top two second-placed teams.
Notably, Lajong defeated Rangdajied in the 2019 MSL final, but Rangdajied exacted revenge by ousting Lajong in the thrilling 2023 semifinals before claiming the title. Their historical rivalry, spanning Shillong Sports Association and All India Football Federation tournaments, adds further intrigue to this quarterfinal showdown. Fans can anticipate yet another landmark encounter between these formidable sides.
