Shocking Move: OYO’s Controversial Ban on Unmarried Couples Sparks Outrage!

In a significant development, hotel booking platform OYO has updated its check-in policies, prohibiting unmarried couples from lodging at partner hotels, with Meerut in Uttar Pradesh as the pilot location. This newly introduced guideline mandates that couples, whether booking online or offline, present valid proof of their relationship upon check-in. OYO’s partner hotels now have the authority to accept or decline bookings, factoring in local societal norms.

According to OYO, this policy is part of a broader strategy to enhance its image as a provider of safe and comfortable accommodations for families, business travelers, students, solo adventurers, and religious tourists. Although currently limited to Meerut, OYO plans to assess the policy’s effectiveness there before considering expansion to other cities based on feedback.

In addition to modifying its policy for couples, OYO is undertaking national safety initiatives, including seminars with partner hotels and local law enforcement. It has also begun the process of blacklisting hotels engaged in unethical practices and addressing unauthorized use of its brand.

A senior OYO official noted in an interview with GPlus that the policy doesn’t completely bar unmarried couples in regions like Assam unless specific crime-related issues arise, suggesting an adaptable approach based on regional contexts.

Interestingly, some residents from various cities have expressed support for similar measures in their areas, highlighting the contentious nature of this policy shift.

However, it’s essential to note that no Indian law prohibits unmarried couples from staying together in hotels. The Indian Constitution’s Article 21 safeguards the rights of unmarried couples, and refusing service based on marital status is considered discriminatory. Hotels should not deny check-ins if identification is provided. Couples facing harassment can legally challenge such actions, emphasizing the importance of constitutional rights over societal prejudices.

OYO’s policy revision and potential expansion raise significant legal and societal debates as the hospitality sector navigates these changes.
