Tripura’s Bold Vision: Achieving Agricultural Self-Sufficiency and Doubling Farmer Incomes for a Prosperous Future
Tripura Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath emphasized the state’s goal to achieve self-sufficiency in agriculture and double farmers’ income under the BJP government. Speaking at the 53rd Annual Conference of the Tripura Agricultural Graduates Association in Agartala, Nath highlighted efforts to uplift the farming community since the BJP assumed power.
Prior to 2017-18, farmers’ monthly income in the state averaged around Rs 6,000, which has since increased to Rs 13,000. Minister Nath attributed this progress to the government’s focus on modernizing agriculture and increasing production. With limited agricultural land, the state is investing in technology and providing soil health cards to promote efficient farming practices.
He revealed that three of Tripura’s districts are currently self-sufficient in food production, while three others are nearing self-sufficiency. Efforts are being made to improve overall productivity, particularly in rice cultivation, where Tripura outpaces even West Bengal. Despite the adverse impact of recent floods on harvests, the agriculture department responded swiftly with emergency seed and sapling distribution.
Minister Nath also outlined strategic initiatives to further boost agricultural self-reliance, focusing on palm oil cultivation and organic farming. Despite challenges, he expressed confidence in increasing productivity and ensuring a stable food supply for the state. The government’s proactive measures demonstrate a commitment to transforming Tripura’s agricultural landscape and enhancing the livelihood of its farmers.
