A memorial event was held at Surjya Club, Cenikuthi, Guwahati, to celebrate the life and contributions of acclaimed Assamese filmmaker and scriptwriter Bhaskar Jyoti Das, who passed away on December 26, 2024, at 51, after battling cancer. The gathering brought together friends, collaborators, and admirers to honor Das’s significant impact on Assamese cinema and storytelling.
The event featured a special screening of Das’s renowned documentary, “An Unknown Summer,” which was an entry at the 2024 International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala. Attendees shared personal memories, underscoring Das’s creative brilliance and deep influence on their lives. Aparna Sarma, a professor at the University College of Los Angeles and collaborator in documentaries about Assam and Northeast India, described Das as a “creative genius” and mourned his loss deeply.
Notable tributes included an audio message from national award-winning filmmaker Supriya Sen, who praised Das’s unique narrative style and enduring passion for cinema. Jaicheng Jai Dohutia, director of the national award-winning film “Haanduk,” delivered an emotional tribute, acknowledging Das as a mentor and friend instrumental to his creative journey. Utpal Borpujari, a national award-winning filmmaker and critic, lauded Das’s commitment to nurturing young filmmakers through initiatives like the “Cinema Within We” workshop series.
Other attendees, including filmmakers Boby Sarma Baruah, Sanjeev Hazarika, theatre personality Nayan Prasad, and journalist Bitopan Borbora, paid homage to Das’s legacy. Das, who left his dental studies to pursue filmmaking, authored award-winning scripts for films such as “Haanduk,” “Sonar Baran Pakhi,” and “Bokul Phulor Dore.” His contributions also extended to impactful documentaries and experimental films, leaving an indelible mark on the industry.
The memorial highlighted Bhaskar Jyoti Das’s enduring legacy as a filmmaker and cultural custodian, inspiring future generations with his fearless storytelling and dedication to Assamese cinema. His work will continue to resonate, ensuring his spirit lives on.
