Honoring Saurav Kumar Chaliha: A Heartfelt Celebration of Assam’s Literary Titan
Guwahati: The Saurav Kumar Chaliha Fan Society upheld its tradition of marking the New Year with “Bhal Khabarar Din” (a day of good news) to honor the esteemed Assamese author, Saurav Kumar Chaliha. The celebrations featured a lecture by Arup Kr Dutta, a noted Indian English writer, on “Stylistic Nuances in Saurav Kumar Chaliha’s Short-Stories.” Dutta praised Chaliha as a masterful storyteller, emphasizing his unique style and versatility in language, which ranges from simple syntax to rich, complex expressions.
The event also saw the launch of “Bhal Khabaror Barnamala,” a collection of critiques and essays about Chaliha by various authors, released by distinguished science writer Dinesh Ch. Goswami. This anthology, published by Bandhab Publishing House, includes a foreword by acclaimed scholar Dr. Hiren Gohain, promising to be a significant resource for Assamese literary enthusiasts.
Drama artiste Nayan Prasad added a theatrical touch by reading Chaliha’s poignant short story “Ira,” captivating the attendees. The secretary of the Fan Society, Mahesh Deka, explained the origins of “Bhal Khabarar Din,” which started in 2010, was paused, and then revived in 2018. The tradition stems from an influential article by Chaliha in 1998, reflecting on youth sensitivity and the importance of humanity.
Chaliha, known for his preference for anonymity, inspired his followers to maintain this annual observance, turning it into a celebration of his literary legacy.
