Chaos Unleashed: Mob Storms SP Office in Kangpokpi – Situation Defused Safely
Fresh tensions emerged in Manipur’s Kangpokpi District on Friday as a protest led by the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) escalated into violence. Demonstrators attacked the office of the Superintendent of Police by throwing stones and petrol bombs. The protest was in response to the deployment of Central Security Forces in Saibol village, an action opposed by Kuki organizations, including CoTU, due to the presence of BSF and CRPF personnel.
The Manipur Police responded to the aggression with adequate force to disperse the mob, successfully bringing the situation under control. During the confrontation, Kangpokpi’s Superintendent of Police, Shri Manoj Prabhakar, sustained injuries, and several vehicles were damaged. Despite these developments, the situation is now stable and is being thoroughly monitored by a significant deployment of security personnel.
Shri Manoj Prabhakar has received the necessary medical attention and is presently leading efforts to maintain peace in the district. The incident is the latest in a series of tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which have been ongoing since a rally by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM) on May 3, 2024. The rallies were sparked by the Manipur High Court’s directive to consider granting Scheduled Tribe status to the Meitei community, an issue that remains a point of contention in the region.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent any further outbreak of violence, as they strive to address the wider tensions affecting Manipur. The challenges persist as the state navigates complex ethnic and cultural dynamics, highlighting the need for continued dialogue and peace-building efforts among the affected communities.
