Northeast Triumph: NEHU Secures Prestigious Grant to Revolutionize Healthcare | Guwahati News
Shillong’s North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has received significant funding from the Indian central government to bolster its biomedical engineering department and stimulate healthcare innovation in the northeast region. The Union Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers, through its Department of Pharmaceuticals, has allocated ₹14 crore under the ‘Capacity Building and Skill Development in Medical Device Sector’ sub-scheme, part of the ‘Strengthening of Medical Device Industry’ initiative. This funding aims to enhance local medical device manufacturing capabilities, minimize import dependency, and boost global competitiveness.
As part of this initiative, NEHU will launch a Master of Technology (M.Tech) program in Medical Devices, alongside a diploma in Medical Device Manufacturing and Quality. These programs are designed to meet the increasing demand for skilled professionals, foster industry-academia partnerships, and improve graduate employability. The curriculum will address the unique healthcare challenges of Meghalaya and surrounding areas, drawing talent and investment to the region.
Additionally, the Union Ministry of Science and Technology, via the Department of Science and Technology, has recommended a grant of ₹2.55 crore under the ‘Fund for Infrastructure in Science & Technology (FIST)’ to establish a state-of-the-art laboratory for advanced biomedical research at NEHU. This facility will host cutting-edge equipment, promoting innovations in biomedical and health technologies with potential global healthcare impacts.
The combined funding aims to elevate NEHU’s infrastructure, facilitating the development of modern classrooms and research facilities that adhere to international standards. This strategic boost is expected to close the skills gap in the medical device sector and create numerous job opportunities, solidifying NEHU’s status as a leading academic institution in the Northeast committed to research and innovation in healthcare technology.
