Reviving Telugu Cinema: The Urgent Need for Visionaries Like ‘Apoorva Singeetham’
Renowned director Singeetham Srinivasa Rao is celebrated for his innovation and creativity in Indian cinema, making an indelible impact through films like “Apoorva Sagodharargal,” where Kamal Haasan was transformed into a short-statured man, and “Aditya 369,” which portrayed Balakrishna as Sri Krishna Devaraya. Singeetham’s work in “Bhairava Dweepam” also revitalized folk music on the big screen.
A trailblazer, Singeetham transcended linguistic boundaries with “Pushpaka Vimana,” a film acclaimed as the first true pan-Indian movie. In tribute to his extraordinary contributions, Kamal Haasan hosted a four-day event titled “Apoorva Singeetham” last month, aiming to honor the director and document his invaluable experiences for future generations.
The celebration kicked off with a screening of “Raja Paarvai” (also known as “Amavasya Chandrudu”) and featured several of Singeetham’s classic works. This event served as a rich platform for learning and inspiration. Esteemed filmmakers and artists such as Naga Ashwin, Lokesh Kanagaraj, Mani Ratnam, Rajiv Menon, Santana Bharathi, Vairamuthu, Suhasini, Akkineni Amala, PC Sriram, Siddharth, Siva Karthikeyan, Nasser, Ilaiyaraaja, and Devi Sri Prasad attended, paying tribute and engaging in creative exchange.
Despite his age, Singeetham interacted energetically with guests, sharing insights and demonstrating a profound understanding of current pan-India cinema. His discussions left attendees in awe of his enduring relevance and depth of knowledge.
The event highlights the need for similar initiatives in the Telugu film industry to honor veteran directors like Raghavendra Rao and Kodandarami Reddy, whose contributions merit celebration and preservation. Although the rich legacies of late filmmakers like K. Viswanath and Bapu weren’t similarly honored, Kamal Haasan’s initiative offers crucial lessons for today’s and tomorrow’s filmmakers. The Telugu film industry is encouraged to follow suit and honor its legendary figures while documenting their experiences for posterity.
