Assam Celebrates Thriving Future as Bhutan’s Green Light on Water Resources Paves Way for Big Gains
Guwahati, Jan 1: Assam and Bhutan are set to deepen their relationship in 2025 through significant infrastructural projects, announced Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Following a recent visit to Bhutan, Sarma reported that King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck has pledged full support for Assam’s initiatives to harness Bhutan’s water resources for electricity and irrigation. This collaboration promises substantial benefits for both regions.
Bhutan aims to expand its trade routes and views Assam as a strategic partner and a potential green hub. While Bhutan currently exports commodities via Jogighopa in Bongaigaon, new routes such as Golakganj in Dhubri are under consideration. Sarma emphasized this cooperation as part of a 30-year vision, supported by External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, to strengthen ties between Assam and Bhutan.
Key infrastructural enhancements include proposed connectivity projects. Sarma expressed optimism about the Indian government announcing a new railway line from Guwahati to Gelephu, with updates expected from Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on January 3. Additionally, progress has been made on a six-lane highway connecting Bongaigaon and Gelephu, along with the anticipated inauguration of a new airport in Guwahati by July, paralleling the quality of Bhutan’s Gelephu airport.
Bhutan’s Vision for Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) promises economic and holistic growth by fostering sustainability and wellness. The Gelephu initiative, led by King Jigme, sees Assam as a complementary economic partner, allowing for luxurious living in Bhutan with opportunities for investment in Assam districts like Kokrajhar, Chirang, and Bongaigaon.
Chief Minister Sarma reiterated Assam’s dedication to cultivating a beneficial partnership with Bhutan, aiming to fortify economic connections while honoring Bhutan’s unique developmental goals. This ambitious collaboration marks a landmark moment for both Assam and Bhutan, encouraging growth and connection in the region.
