Historic Triumph: Nishanta Chakraborty’s Stunning Maiden Century Elevates Meghalaya in Vijay Hazare Trophy
Meghalaya batter Nishanta Chakraborty achieved a significant career milestone by scoring his first century for the senior men’s team in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25. In a match against Andhra Pradesh held in Mumbai, Chakraborty delivered a remarkable 101-run performance from 108 balls, featuring 13 boundaries and two sixes. His efforts helped Meghalaya set a total of 223 runs in 48.2 overs. Despite this impressive performance, Andhra Pradesh decisively won the match, achieving a 10-wicket victory by reaching the target in just 29.3 overs.
Chakraborty, who recently graduated from Meghalaya’s U-23 squad, marked this standout achievement in only his fifth senior match. His innings was complemented by a pivotal partnership with Arpit Bhatewara, who scored a composed 66 off 90 balls and hit eight fours and one six. Together, they forged a 177-run partnership for the second wicket, marking the highest partnership for Meghalaya in the tournament.
This total marked Meghalaya’s best performance in a challenging season where they have faced some of the top cricket teams in the country. While the team is yet to secure a victory in the tournament, standout individual performances hint at a promising future.
On December 23, Lerry Sangma narrowly missed a half-century against Railways, scoring 47 runs. Earlier, on December 21, Swarajeet Das produced an impressive bowling performance with figures of 4/45 in 10 overs against Himachal Pradesh. Meanwhile, Arpit Bhatewara has demonstrated consistent form, accumulating 165 runs across five innings.
Meghalaya’s next fixture is scheduled against Sikkim on January 3, where they aim to conclude their campaign on a positive note, showcasing the potential and promise of their emerging talents.
