Congress Condemns Government Over Broken Promises and Shocking Encounter Deaths: A Rising Tide of Agitation
The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has criticized the state government’s handling of numerous issues under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership. Speaking to the press, Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia challenged Sarma’s claims of an “agitation-free” Assam, pointing to ongoing protests and public dissatisfaction. Saikia urged the government to honor its election commitments, particularly regarding the safety and security of citizens, noting that discussions around identity, land, and home remain unmet.
He expressed alarm over the rising number of encounter deaths in Assam, urging the government to address these incidents as mandated by the Supreme Court. Saikia criticized the Assam Police for alleged inaction in certain cases, notably highlighting a case where a woman died following police negligence, and another where action was taken only after a social media post by the Chief Minister.
On the economic front, Saikia disputed the state’s development claims, citing NITI Aayog data that ranks Assam among the bottom five states by GSDP and highlights concerning poverty, hunger, and health indices. He accused the government of prioritizing industrialists over the people and raised alarms about “fake farmers” benefiting from government schemes meant for genuine farmers.
Additionally, Saikia questioned the smart meter project, alleging a lack of transparency and potential undue benefits for industrial interests. He also demanded the removal of a wall obscuring Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s statue at Janata Bhawan and called for a national research institute in his name in Assam. The APCC’s comprehensive critique aims to bring these critical issues to the forefront of public and governmental attention.
