Breaking Barriers: Nagaland 2024’s Inspiring Journey Towards Inclusion Amid Persistent Challenges
In 2024, Nagaland experienced a dynamic year marked by historic civic developments, political challenges, and natural adversities. The Urban Local Bodies elections, held on June 26, broke new ground with 33% women’s reservation, significantly boosting women’s representation in decision-making. Despite some regions abstaining due to the Frontier Nagaland Territory (FNT) issue, the elections proceeded, culminating in 102 women candidates winning seats.
The Indian National Congress (INC) saw a fleeting resurgence, securing the State’s lone Lok Sabha seat in April, a significant victory after a decade of electoral setbacks. However, this momentum did not extend to the Urban Local Bodies elections, where the ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) dominated.
Persistent challenges plagued Nagaland’s political landscape. Despite ongoing dialogues, Naga political issues remained unresolved, exemplified by leadership conflicts within Naga Political Groups (NPGs). The Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO) advanced its FNT demand, culminating in an agreement with the Government of India for a “Unique Arrangement” offering autonomy options.
Natural calamities, including heavy rains and landslides, severely disrupted life and infrastructure, with notable incidents such as a damaging rockslide on National Highway-29 in July. Economic issues compounded these challenges, with the State witnessing a steep unemployment increase in 2023-24, affecting both educated individuals and youth.
Significant judicial developments included the Gauhati High Court’s annulment of over 900 police appointments due to irregularities. In a positive stride, the Inner Line Permit (ILP) was re-implemented in three districts to regulate entry into Nagaland.
Culturally, the 25th Hornbill Festival attracted over 200,000 visitors, while Hokato Hotozhe Sema’s historic Paralympic achievement brought pride to the State. Meanwhile, the government introduced the CM’s Universal Life Insurance Scheme aiming to provide coverage to every household. These events collectively underscored Nagaland’s evolving socio-political tapestry in 2024.
