Manipur Triumphs Over Hailstorms and Floods: CM N Biren Singh Secures Crucial Rs 250 Crore Relief Aid

Amidst accusations of neglect in the Union Budget, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has stoutly defended the financial allocations to the state. Addressing concerns raised by opposition figures, Singh labeled their criticisms as “petty politics,” asserting that Manipur has already received over Rs 250 crore for hailstorm and flood relief, funds which have been distributed to the affected populace.

The opposition’s grievances center around an alleged financial shortfall for Manipur in the recent budget. However, Singh emphasizes that significant funds have been allocated and utilized to mitigate the impacts of natural disasters.

The controversy gained momentum on July 23 when Lok Sabha MP Dr. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam condemned the Union Budget 2024 for failing to address the plight of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Manipur. Akoijam criticized the budget for the absence of flood relief and rehabilitation packages for IDPs, dramatically stating, “Absence thy name is Manipur—that’s what this budget says!”

Funds were allocated for flood and irrigation issues in states like Bihar, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Sikkim, yet Manipur’s severe flooding and IDP crisis were notably overlooked.

Furthermore, Assam MP Gaurav Gogoi criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, suggesting they lack a genuine understanding of the complexities and aspirations of the northeastern region.

The budget’s perceived neglect has stirred significant discontent in Manipur, with leaders calling for attention to the urgent needs of people affected by natural calamities and displacement. Nevertheless, Chief Minister Biren Singh maintains that the state has received substantial support and is managing the allocated resources effectively.
