Unveiling the Power: Why Only India, Russia, the US, and 6 Others Dominate the Nuclear Frontier—The Untold Struggles of Nations Left Behind

Nine countries worldwide currently possess nuclear weapons: the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, China, India, Pakistan, North Korea, and Israel. Of these, Russia holds the largest stockpile with 5,580 warheads, followed by the United States with 5,044. Together, these two nations account for 90% of the total global arsenal of 12,121 nuclear weapons.

The limited number of nuclear-armed nations can largely be attributed to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), enacted in 1970. This treaty aims to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and restricts nuclear armament to countries that had conducted tests before the treaty: the U.S., Russia, the U.K., France, and China. A total of 190 countries have signed the NPT, choosing to remain non-nuclear as part of global efforts to curb nuclear proliferation.

Countries such as Germany, South Korea, Japan, and Australia, despite their economic and military capabilities, have chosen to adhere to the NPT requirements, refraining from developing nuclear weapons.

However, India, Pakistan, North Korea, and Israel have acquired nuclear capabilities outside this treaty framework. India and Pakistan ignored the NPT by never signing it, allowing them to develop nuclear arsenals unfettered by treaty constraints. North Korea initially signed the NPT but withdrew in 2003 after conducting nuclear tests. Israel maintains a policy of nuclear ambiguity, neither confirming nor denying its arsenal but is believed to have developed it covertly.

The existence of nuclear weapons remains a significant global security concern, prompting ongoing international dialogue about disarmament and non-proliferation efforts. Understanding the geopolitical landscape surrounding nuclear weapons helps illuminate the strategic decisions behind maintaining or rejecting a nuclear arsenal in a complex world order.
