Breaking Barriers: J&K Professionals Embrace Hindi, Bridging Gaps for Tourists Amidst M’laya’s Struggles
Tourism continues to thrive in Shillong and Srinagar, despite language barriers posing significant challenges. Both cities are renowned tourist destinations in India, attracting a large number of visitors annually. However, they differ in how they address these linguistic hurdles. While Srinagar has taken effective steps to adapt, Shillong lags behind.
In Kashmir, stakeholders in the tourism sector have proactively addressed language challenges by learning Hindi, enabling better communication with tourists from mainland India. A Srinagar tourist cab driver highlighted that since most tourists do not understand Kashmiri, locals engage with them in Hindi and Urdu. This adaptation enhances the tourist experience and makes visitors feel more welcome. Residents in places like Lal Chowk emphasize the need for courtesy and accommodation toward tourists.
Conversely, Meghalaya faces ongoing communication issues, particularly in its rural areas where tourism is budding. Though locals and tourists often converse in English, many visitors from outside the state are more comfortable speaking Hindi. This preference leads to frequent misunderstandings, as significant efforts to bridge the communication gap are lacking in Meghalaya. Unlike their Kashmiri counterparts, tourism stakeholders in Meghalaya have not benefited from government-led initiatives or capacity-building programs to enhance Hindi language skills.
Local stakeholders in Meghalaya argue that such initiatives could significantly improve the overall experience for tourists and foster greater potential for growth in the industry. Despite these impediments, tourism in both Shillong and Srinagar remains robust, drawing large numbers of tourists annually. The potential for further growth is immense, and addressing language barriers could unlock new opportunities, enhancing the appeal of these picturesque destinations even further.
