Chaos Unleashed: Bandh Brings Imphal Valley to a Standstill
In Manipur’s Imphal Valley, a 24-hour shutdown on Saturday severely disrupted daily life. This shutdown was organized by a Joint Action Committee (JAC) in protest of the killing of Laishram Prem, a village defense volunteer, by police commandos on December 14. The incident saw six others arrested under allegations of being members of the outlawed PREPAK group, which the police claim was involved in extortion. Authorities reported recovering weapons from the group, some of which were allegedly stolen from police armories.
The shutdown impacted all five districts of the valley, affecting markets, educational institutions, and vehicle movement. Prominent areas like Imphal’s Paona and Thangal Keithel markets were shut, while schools, colleges, and most vehicles remained absent from the roads. The enforcement of the shutdown was carried out by women vigilantes known as Meira Paibis, along with local clubs, civil society groups, and the Women’s Wing of the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI).
Despite no major incidents being reported, some vehicles were vandalized by bandh supporters in Bishnupur district. The JAC is withholding claiming Prem’s body until their demands are met. These demands include stringent action against the police involved in Prem’s killing and the unconditional release of the six detained volunteers.
The situation remains tense as the community awaits a government response to the JAC’s demands.
