A study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Network Open underscores the importance of aerobic exercise for reducing body fat and waist circumference, emphasizing that at least 150 minutes per week is essential. This conclusion arises from a comprehensive review of 116 studies, involving nearly 7,000 overweight and obese adults. While those engaging in 300 minutes of exercise weekly experienced the greatest weight and waist reductions, notable improvements in body fat percentage were achieved with just 150 minutes each week.
Aerobic exercises such as running, cycling, and swimming enhance heart rate and promote oxygen circulation, aiding fat burning and cardiovascular health. Researchers from Imperial College London highlighted that previous guidelines were mostly based on isolated studies, prompting this broad review of randomised clinical trials (RCTs), spanning at least eight weeks of supervised aerobic exercise.
Participants in these trials, with a BMI over 25 in Western countries or 23 in Asian ones, displayed significant reductions in weight, waist circumference, and body fat with varying exercise commitments. While moderate activity of 30 minutes weekly led to modest improvements, 150 minutes or more delivered “clinically meaningful” results. Specifically, a weekly commitment of 150 minutes saw more than a 2% reduction in body fat percentage, whereas those exercising 300 minutes faced substantial weight loss of over 4 kilograms and waist size reduction of 4 to 5 centimeters.
Despite more dramatic weight and waist results from higher exercise volumes, the most striking decrease in body fat percentage remained linked to exercising 150 minutes weekly.
