Tribute to Legacy: Congress’s Passionate Call for Manmohan Singh Memorial Gains Government Support
Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s cremation with full state honors at Nigambodh Ghat in New Delhi has sparked controversy. Congress criticized the government’s decision, stating it was a “deliberate insult” to India’s first Sikh Prime Minister, as it allegedly ignored their request for a more befitting location that could serve as his memorial. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge had asked for a specific site, but government officials, including Home Minister Amit Shah, explained that while a memorial would be accommodated, the site for cremation and the memorial could not be immediately determined. This led to allegations from Congress that the government was not honoring Singh’s stature adequately. The government highlighted that due to land constraints, a memorial at the ‘Rashtriya Smriti’ complex would be appropriate, following Singh’s own government’s decision in 2013 to consolidate spaces for such commemorations. Meanwhile, Sukhbir Singh Badal of SAD suggested Rajghat as a suitable site, in line with tradition. However, the government maintained that plans for a memorial remained aligned with Congress’ wishes. As a sign of respect, the Union Cabinet scheduled a state funeral for Singh on Saturday at 11:45 a.m., accompanied by a half-day holiday for central government offices and PSUs. Despite reassurances, political tensions remain over what Congress perceives as a lack of immediate action in honoring Singh’s legacy.
