In a tragic road accident on NH-39 at Katakhal by-pass in Hailakandi district, a young man named Rupam Roy, aged 23, from Katlicherra, lost his life on Friday morning. The accident occurred when a truck loaded with goods collided with a car in which Rupam was a passenger. The collision was reportedly due to dense fog reducing visibility. Three other passengers in the car sustained injuries; two are critically wounded and have been transferred to Silchar Medical College and Hospital, while one with minor injuries was admitted to a local hospital.
The police, led by the officer-in-charge of Katakhal police station, quickly responded to the scene, with assistance from local residents, and ensured the injured received prompt medical care at Khalinagar’s Sarojini Hospital. Despite efforts to save him, Rupam was declared dead by doctors upon arrival at the hospital. Eyewitnesses attributed the accident to both the thick fog and the car traveling at high speed, which likely impaired the driver’s control, leading to the fatal crash.
Authorities are investigating the incident, balancing the need for accountability with the community’s call for enhanced road safety measures to prevent such accidents in adverse weather conditions.
