Meghalaya’s Bold Crackdown: Transforming Education with a Strict Academic Calendar
The Meghalaya Education Department has enforced strict regulations on school operations, prohibiting schools from declaring holidays without official approval. This reform signifies a major shift in the governance of education in the state.
Beginning in the 2025 academic year, classes will start on February 10. The schedule includes a Class Readiness Programme to help students prepare for the new year. Primary school students (Classes I-V) will participate in this program until March 7, while middle and high school students (Classes VI-X) will complete it by February 28.
A notable change involves examination procedures, as the Department will oversee assessment schedules for Classes VI-IX. Schools are required to submit evaluation results to a digital platform, fostering transparency and standardization. Standardized question papers for annual exams will be developed by the Department of Educational Research and Training (DERT) or the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBoSE).
The newly defined academic calendar specifies term dates, with the school year ending on November 28 for pre-primary and December 17 for Classes I-IX, followed by a winter break. Schools are mandated to achieve 200 working days for primary levels and 220 for higher classes, along with 800 and 1,000 instructional hours, respectively.
In response to academic performance concerns spotlighted by the National Achievement Survey (NAS), schools will concentrate efforts at the beginning of each term. Four weeks will be dedicated to foundational learning for primary classes, while higher classes will engage in three weeks of targeted instruction.
These comprehensive measures by the Meghalaya Education Department are designed to enhance the quality and consistency of education across the state, addressing existing challenges and setting a structured path forward for students and educators alike.
