Emotional Farewell: Beloved Former PM Manmohan Singh Passes Away at 92, Leaving a Powerful Legacy
Guwahati: India bids farewell to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who passed away on December 26 at the age of 92. Singh had been receiving treatment for age-related ailments when he suddenly lost consciousness at home. Despite immediate resuscitation efforts and being rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9:51 PM.
Singh, who served as India’s 13th Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, was instrumental in transforming the nation’s economic policies. A celebrated economist, he earned his doctoral degree from Oxford and Cambridge and contributed significantly to India’s economic landscape. His pivotal role as Finance Minister in 1991 helped India navigate a severe balance of payments crisis through sweeping reforms. His measures, including the devaluation of the rupee and liberalization of trade policies, opened India’s economy to international markets, setting the stage for the country’s remarkable growth.
Under Singh’s prime ministerial leadership, India achieved an average GDP growth rate of 8%. He implemented impactful programs like the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), which bolstered rural welfare. His tenure also witnessed substantial infrastructure developments, enhancing roads, power, and telecom sectors. However, his administration faced scrutiny during his second term, with allegations of policy paralysis and corruption casting a shadow over his accomplishments.
On the international front, Singh championed India’s role in global affairs, fortifying relationships with major nations and advocating India’s presence in influential forums such as the United Nations, G-20, and BRICS, thereby asserting its rising global influence.
As India mourns the passing of a leader whose intellectual prowess and commitment profoundly influenced the nation’s economic and political framework, Manmohan Singh’s legacy as a transformative figure in India’s history remains indelible.
