Unbelievable Discovery: Doctors Shocked to Uncover 27 Contact Lenses in Woman’s Eye – Find Out the Shocking Truth!
During a routine cataract surgery, doctors uncovered a surprising medical mystery when they found 27 contact lenses lodged under a 67-year-old woman’s eyelid in the UK, as reported by Live Science. The woman, who had been wearing monthly disposable contact lenses for 35 years without regular eye check-ups, had experienced minor eye discomfort but no significant vision issues. Remarkably, she had avoided any severe eye infections despite the lenses being stuck, which could have potentially led to serious complications.
The incident came to light when surgeons encountered a bluish mass under her eyelid while administering anesthetic. Closer examination revealed 17 clumped contact lenses, bound by mucus, with an additional 10 retrieved using a microscope. This unexpected discovery led to the postponement of her cataract surgery for two weeks to mitigate any risk of bacterial infection.
The cause of this buildup remains uncertain. The patient mentioned she sometimes couldn’t find her lens in her right eye during removal, assuming it may have fallen out. Her doctors speculate that her “deep set eyes” could have facilitated the retention of such a large number of lenses. These lenses, meant for 30-day use but removable each night, evidently remained in place unknowingly.
Reported in the journal The BMJ, this case highlights the importance of regular eye examinations and proper contact lens use. The doctors recommend clinicians to check under patients’ eyelids using fluorescein stain to detect any hidden lenses, emphasizing the need for better monitoring to prevent similar incidents.
