Critical Breakthrough: EKH DC’s High-Stakes Meeting with Mawjymbuin Committee Set for Jan 3
The East Khasi Hills district administration has scheduled a district-level committee meeting on January 3 to address issues related to Krem Mawjymbuin at Mawsynram. The meeting, convened by Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah, who chairs the committee, comes after Kutumba Suraksha Parishad (KSP), an Assam-based organization, issued an ultimatum over the denial of permission to perform religious rituals at the cave.
KSP President Satya Ranjan Borah confirmed they would attend the meeting, expressing satisfaction with the Meghalaya government’s response. Borah stated that all protests would be put on hold until the meeting’s outcomes are assessed. He emphasized that KSP seeks peaceful resolution and aims to uphold national integrity and socio-cultural harmony, as outlined in Article 51 (A) of the Indian Constitution.
The organization has requested the inclusion of all stakeholders in the meeting, including representatives from local groups like the Dorbar, Seng Khasi, and Hima Mawsynram. They have also asked for a site visit to further understand the cave’s significance.
Earlier, the KSP announced plans for a demonstration in Byrnihat in response to the prohibition of religious rituals at Mawjymbuin cave, leading the Ri-Bhoi district administration to ban the protest. The group had also threatened to disrupt road communications between Assam and Meghalaya unless the restrictions on Hindu worship at the cave were lifted.
The Mawsynram Dorbar Shnong maintains its stance that the cave is primarily a tourist attraction, not a site for worship, thus banning religious activities there. The upcoming meeting is anticipated to address these tensions and find a mutually agreeable solution.
