Urgent Alert: HNLC Condemns KSP’s Intimidating Threats to Sacred Mawjymbuin Cave
The Hynñiewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has strongly condemned the Kutumba Suraksha Parishad’s (KSP) threats to disrupt road connectivity between Assam and Meghalaya in response to a ban on Hindu worship at Mawjymbuin Cave. According to the HNLC, the cave forms a vital part of the Hynñiewtrep people’s cultural heritage and is not a designated Hindu shrine.
Sainkupar Nongtraw, the HNLC’s general secretary, accused the KSP of attempting to spread hatred, incite communal tension, and compromise the sovereignty of the Hynñiewtrep nation. The HNLC emphasized the longstanding guardianship of the cave by the Hynñiewtrep people, asserting that no external entity should dictate how they manage their sacred lands.
The HNLC criticized the KSP’s attempt to compare Mawjymbuin Cave to Hindu pilgrimage sites such as the Kamakhya Temple and Tirupati Balaji, labeling it a calculated effort to diminish the cultural significance of the cave for the Hynñiewtrep community. They also argued that there is no historical or archaeological evidence to validate the KSP’s claim that the cave has been an exclusive site for Hindu worship.
In response to the KSP’s divisive rhetoric, the HNLC demanded action against the organization and warned of strong retaliation if any road blockades or attempts to provoke communal tensions occur.
This development highlights the ongoing cultural and political sensitivities in the region, underscoring the complex interplay of religious and ethnic identities that often lead to tensions in Northeast India.
