In a move providing temporary relief, the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has extended the contracts for faculty involved in Tata Education Trust (TET)-funded projects until March 31, 2025. Over 100 teaching and non-teaching staff received the new contracts just before their scheduled end date of December 31, 2024. A senior TISS official confirmed the extension, noting that even though the grace period for these projects was set to conclude at the end of December, the institute had sufficient funds to extend them for an additional three months. A sustainability committee is actively working on a long-term plan to maintain the projects’ viability.
The decision to extend contracts comes after TISS had initially, in June, discontinued contracts due to a lack of funds, a decision they swiftly reversed following TET’s assurance of continued funding. This temporary resolution allowed projects to continue until December, while a committee was established to explore sustainable strategies moving forward.
As the contract expiration date approached, concerns arose among faculty and students, fearing disruptions in the academic year. However, TISS assured that funding was available to maintain the projects in the short term. The Progressive Students Forum, an active student group, welcomed the extension but stressed the need for a permanent solution to avoid future uncertainties.
Looking ahead, TISS anticipates discussions with the Tata Trust in January to secure future funding, as part of its efforts to develop a sustainable framework for these critical projects. This proactive step is aimed at ensuring the continuity and stability of academic programs at the institute, crucial for both students and faculty as the academic year progresses.
