Breaking: Centre Triumphantly Abolishes ‘No Detention Policy’ Sparking Hope for Educational Excellence in Classes 5 and 8

Guwahati: In a significant policy shift, the Indian government has abolished the ‘No Detention Policy’ in schools, reinstating the practice of retaining students in classes 5 and 8 if they fail their annual examinations. This decision, announced on December 23 by Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of the Department of School Education and Literacy, aims to enhance learning outcomes among students.

According to the revised policy, students who do not pass their exams will have a chance to retake them within two months. Failure to clear the retest will result in the student not advancing to the next grade. Despite this stricter stance on promotion, students will not be expelled before class 8, ensuring they maintain access to education.

This marks a notable change from previous educational policies aligned with the Right to Education Act, which promoted automatic progression up to class 8. The government believes this move will encourage better academic performance and accountability in the education system.
