Dynamic Leadership: Assam Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah’s Impactful Review Meeting on Urban Local Bodies in Guwahati
Earlier this week, the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) unveiled an initiative to restore the Fancy Bazaar parking lot, located at one of the most bustling commercial districts in the Northeast. Originally inaugurated in 2020, the parking facility was celebrated as a potential relief for the escalating traffic congestion plaguing Fancy Bazaar. However, shortly after its opening, the parking lot became a source of discontent among local residents and commuters due to several infrastructure shortcomings.
The facility has faced persistent complaints about waterlogging, challenging muddy conditions, and inefficient traffic management, which have severely undermined its functionality. Many users found themselves frustrated as the parking lot, rather than alleviating congestion, contributed to new problems. A resident of Jail Road lamented, “The condition of this parking lot is terrible. Vehicles get stuck all the time. Parking here should be convenient, not a nightmare.”
In response to these mounting issues, the GMDA has announced plans to overhaul the facility, focusing on improving its infrastructure and management. This decision reflects the urgency to address these impediments and restore the parking lot’s intended purpose as a practical solution to local traffic woes. The upcoming changes by GMDA aim to enhance the user experience and ensure that the parking lot fulfills its role as a key component in managing Fancy Bazaar’s traffic dynamics.
